This is a scarce set of an early work on world geography, "Pomponii Melae - De Situ Orbis Libri III" by Pomponius Mela (the earliest known Roman geographer who wrote around 43 A.D.). Published in 1748; 2nd edition, thus (stated). Complete set in two volumes. Original full vellum bindings as issued. The fold-out map is present in volume I - the loose translation of the map title is "The World Drawn from the Mind of Melae, the Most Christian Geographer of the King." Both volumes contain illustrations and vignettes. Here are a few examples of the chapters (with their English translations): Of the World and its Parts; Short Description of Asia; Short Description of Europe; A Brief Description of Africa; The Outer Coast of Spain; Egypt.and much more. "De Situ Orbis" is considered to be the only formal treatise on the topic of geography in classic Latin. Condition: Some foxing and staining to the vellum binding on both volumes. Sharp cover corners. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. The fold-out map in volume is present and firmly attached. All front/back covers are firmly in place and are not at all shaky. Consistent unoffensive, mild foxing to the pages of both volumes. Both volumes have a rectangular name/address label affixed to the top-right corner of the front end paper. Both front end papers have a name/date (1935) written in pen; the front pastedown of volume I has an old quote written in Latin in pencil. Overall the set is in Good+ condition.
