Heinrich Göttron, in 1931, was among the first to more fully describe the cutaneous manifestations of DM, including the hallmark atrophic violaceous papules that lie over the dorsal-lateral aspects of the knuckles. He indicated that these unique papules, later to be referred to as Göttron's papules, were "characteristic of the disease." However, he did not focus on the relationship between the cutaneous and systemic manifestations of DM." Richard D.
