Pictures of Early Life, Or, Sketches of Youth By Mrs. Emma C. Embury, Harper & Brothers, New York, 1854, 310 pp, green blind cloth, 6.75 x 4 , 18mo. In fair condition. Binding worn with moderate soiling to cloth, rubbed edges and rounded corners. Intricate Vitex or Chaste plant design on front and rear boards. Spine worn with crushing to ends. Lacking end papers. Pastedowns soiled with toning and staining. Textblock is soiled with moderate foxing and dampness staining to top margins. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. Very scarce early work of Embury (1806-1863) an American author and poet. Under the pen name of Ianthe , she contributed to the periodicals of the day, and may be considered among the the pioneers of female literature in the United States. She was praised throughout her career for writing works emphasizing domesticity and feminine virtue with moral messages appropriate for children.
