203 pgs., 8vo. 3/4 calf binding, actually 3 books issued as one, fragile but intact, sporadic light foxing throughout, marbled boards still covered, book block is solid, and there are both Cruickshank engravings in the book and 8 full-page unusual advertisements at the end, for books of similar popular novel tastes in that era, tales written by Ainsworth, Cervantes and others. This is probably the mixed bag of stuff that built a reading public in our new nation, in an era when these 'triple-decker' sensational stories of English castles and executions were billed as "romances", and readers were buying those books in growing numbers, while authentic American tales had yet to emerge in commercial competition, to appeal to a smaller but more educated and cultured readership. Other parts of the book besides the "Tower" are titled "The Lancashire Witches", and "The Illustrated Old St. Paul's". Average Antiquarian condition (no dust jacket), generally worn surfaces and aged paper. Backstrip and its titles are present though mildly cracked. Seller Inventory # 2116
