About this Item
Oblong folio. Measuring 12.5" x 10". String-tied black leather over flexible paper boards. Contains 338 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 8" x 10", some with captions. Very good album with rubbing, chips on the corners of the boards, and edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album of Wellesley College between 1911 and 1917 featuring images of the campus and surrounding wooded areas in various seasons. The album was compiled by a student at the college and includes well-composed photographs from her time at the school and post-graduation visits. Included throughout the album are the various class years of the seated student body. There are also portraits of graduating seniors posed around the campus in their caps and gowns. The students are also seen posed with the hoops employed in the tradition of "hoop rolling" which dates back to 1895. The senior girls run a race and the winner "is said to be the first woman in her class to achieve success, however she defines it." The winner is also tossed into the lake which is seen here. Other Wellesley traditions include the annual follies and the May Fair with large well-composed images of the events including the May Queen posed with her court along with fairies, Greek Goddesses and even a Spartan legion employed to enact short plays. There are also photographs of College Hall before the fire of 1914 and photos of the aftermath documenting the ruined building. Women are seen in candids throughout the photographs dancing, laughing, and in various costumes including one of a woman dressed in pants and another of a girl in blackface. The album ends with a wonderful photo of two girls dressed as butterflies. A wonderful and extensive collection of well-composed photographs detailing a young woman's college years at an exceptional women's institution. Seller Inventory # 411700
