About this Item
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 9 1/4" x 11 1/4", London: 1813. Beautifully colored early 19th century map of Persia by Cary depicts the region extending from the Black Sea to the Indus River. Hand colored to delineate regions and provinces, the map notes important cities, rivers, towns, mountains, deserts, and other topographical features throughout. Relief is depicted by hachure. 'The Great Pearl Fishery' is noted in the Gulf. John Cary (1754-1835) was a British cartographer and engraver. His highly detailed and accurate maps mark a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. This map is a fine example of Cary's work.
