Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Henry Wetherbee Henshaw(1850 1930) was anAmericanornithologistand ethnologist. He worked at the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology from 1888 to 1892 and was editor of the journalAmerican Anthropologist. In 1872 Henshaw joined the Wheeler Survey as anaturalist, and in 1874 had his most successful field expedition, going fromSanta Fe, New MexicotoGila Riverand south-westernArizona. There he met with the nativeApaches, and caught specimens for the Smithsonian. In 1875, he returned to Washington, and was approached byJohn Wesley Powellof theBureau of Ethnology.Along withC. Hart MerriamandGrove Karl Gilbert, Henshaw set out West on theUnited States Geological Survey, where in addition to his ornithological work, Henshaw worked onlinguisticsandanthropology, eventually compiling two volume book titledHandbook of North American Indians North of Mexico.
