About this Item
Photograph shows Peggy's Cove church on left and inlet right John C. M. Hayward was born in Newfoundland in either 1876 or 1879 and the first record we have for his studio was found in McAlpine's Halifax City Directory for 1923. He had studios on Gottingen, Maynard, Upper Water, Granville, Grafton, South and Buckingham Street. From 1926 -1930, the directories list him as a photographer for the Chronicle/Star newspapers, Halifax, N.S. The earliest photograph by him in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia is dated 1920 (The Governor-General and wife, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire in Sydney, N.S. July 31, 1920) and the most recent is 1950 (The Anglican Synod in May, 1950). He is mostly know for his pictures of the Royal Canadian Navy and life in Halifax during World war II. Also his series of photographs of the Navy Munitions explosion in Dartmouth on July 18, 1945 are exceptionally well done as it occurred a night. He died in December of 1950. Black and white photograph on beige board. Seller Inventory # 41223
