About this Item
Printed by the Nonconformists of Great Britain and Ireland Associated for Promoting the Dissenters' Chapels Bill . London, 1844, this being a presentation copy (so noted in the imprint) here to The Revd. M C Frankland; 8vo, pp xviii, 492; tight and clean other than for some scattered foxing but bound in a rather dreary brown cloth with startlingly white end papers contrasting with the now toned paper of the text. The Bill derived from religious squabbling linked to a bequest for benevolent purposes and an associated financial trust. The point at issue was whether Unitarians might benefit or whether benefit was to be restricted to those committing to Trinitarianism; the purpose of the Bill, subsequently enacted in 1844, was to have a retrospective element attached to the date on which Unitarianism obtained legal tolerance as a belief and to set a cap of 25 years beyond which the right of possession of a chapel could not be challenged on doctrinal grounds.
