Lincoln, Boston, 1806-07, Volume I in full original leather, Volume II in original half leather with marbled boards, 9 x 5.5 , 8vo. In fair condition. Great Early Republic bindings! Volume one is worn at boards with scuffing, numerous scratch marks, dryness at edges some ink staining at bottom edge. Joints creased, dried. Spine dulled with light chipped to spine label. Contemporary ownership on front pastedown, lacking front fly leaf. Soiling to gutters. Text block lightly toned, darker at edges. Some foxing to text, small instances of age-stain. Numerous instances of dried plant material throughout text, mostly ferns. Binding intact. Volume two boards are worn, scuffed and dried. Spines creased, dulled. Corners rubbed and slightly crushed. Old hand Panopolist written on pastedown. Library of Valentin H. Rabe 11/83 stamped on front fly leaf. Persistent dampness staining to text block at top and bottom edges. Slightly affects text. Text is toned with scattered foxing. Some age-stain. Free of known markings. Various dried plant material throughout as well. Binding intact. Please see photos. Scarce. The Panoplist was a religious monthly magazine printed from 1805 until 1820 edited by Jeremiah Evarts. Evarts (1781-1831) was a Christian missionary, reformer, and activist for the rights of Native Americans. He was a leading opponent of the Indian removal policy of the United States Government.
