8vo. 5.5 x 8.25 inches. [1] pp. advertisement + 131 pp., including 4 pp. advertisements at front. In half cloth later rebacked over tan stiff card boards with advertisements on pastedowns. Boards worn and stained with small loss at edges. Some early ink amendments and notes on a few pages, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by tables. The first part of this guide is concerned with listing captains and flag officers of the Navy and their prospects of reaching higher ranks through a process of seniority; hence the lists of future and possible Admirals of the Fleet. The long Appendix contains very useful historical lists of naval commanders and commodores of all principal commands and bases, e.g. the Nore since 1797, Portsmouth and Devonport, the Channel Squadron and Fleet, the Mediterranean, North American and West Indian Stations, Hong Kong, Australia, West Coast of Africa, The Cape, Dockyard Superintendents, etc. James Bramble was a naval clerk in 1868 and later Paymaster and Clerk to Secretary to Flag Officer Portsmouth.
