About this Item
The product competed on world markets with other twines -- Manila and Sisal -- for rope manufacturing. Thus the volume is of considerable economic interest, as well as botanical. "New Zealand flax, or Phormium fibre as it should be more properly, is again attracting attention, and during the last two years the demand for it has been steadily on the increase, as shown by the tables which are appended . [A] special application of greater utility and extension has been discovered for the Phormium hemp, or machine-dressed fibre, which has greatly increased demand. This is the production of twine for use in the harvesting machine. The substitution of twine for wire in reapers and binders was at first attended by considerable loss to farmers, arising from the bursting of sheaves through imperfection of the knot. This was owing to the defective quality of the twine, and in practice it has been found that no fibre makes a twine that is so suitable for this special use as the better qualities of machine-dressed Phormium." [Preface to the Second Edition, 1889] 95 (+ xx, one unnumbered) pages, with [figures], [tables], and 2 Plates. ExLib markings include stamps, embossment, and accession data on title page; embossments on five additional pages, and prior owner's stamp on three text edges. Otherwise boards are rubbed and show some color loss; bookseller label, stamps of prior owner, and laminate losses on front cover verso and rear cover recto; front and rear endpapers have browned; text is strong and clean, but coloring throughout.
