8vo. 5 x 8.25 inches. viii + 115 + [5] pp. Bound in original calf; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt lines with contrasting title label, gilt. Extremities worn, including base of spine but otherwise a good copy. The Inquiry was published anonymously in all editions, by the philosopher and freethinker, Anthony Collins (1676-1729). In it he rejected the concept of free will, denied that he was an atheist or agnostic in spite of his unorthodox views, and 'also defended the idea that human liberty, defined as the power of acting as one wills or pleases, is compatible with necessity' (DNB). Collins was educated at Eton and Cambridge and trained as a lawyer, living in London and Essex, where he served as a J.P. First published in 1717 and scarce in this Glasgow octavo edition of 1749.
