Scarce. Rare. No date but an elegant gift inscription is dated Nov 30th 1861. Further inscription of 1957. Illustrated with delicate engravings inc tissue-guarded frontis. Folded map measuring 25.5cm x 32cm. Text is detailed and comprehensive with the unnamed author(s) outspoken in their analysis of life in mid C19 China. Blind stamped boards worn with front panel detached. Rear hinge cracked and moment of shaking half way through, but generally book block is tight. Faded damp stain runs through lower edge of pages.
