Scarce sea chart in two sheets issued by the Imperial German Navy. Linen-backed, excellent condition. The map is dated 1888, updated from and initial survey in 1876, but there is a rubber stamp at the lower left with an 1897 date. Shows the coast of Mecklenburg and Holstein from Hohwacht to just above Rostock. Includes the southern peninsula of the Danish island of Falster and the island of Fehmarn. Inset plan of the town of Warnemunde. The German Coast Survey was a branch of originally the Prussian, later Imperial German, Navy, but was never especially prolific. This department was so moribund, and worries about relying on foreign sources of nautical information were so great, that in 1902 the Reichstag granted 2 million Reichsmark to expand the German nautical chart series to 2,400 nautical charts over the following ten years. 508 nautical charts were available at the beginning of the First World War. It is not clear how many charts had been executed by the German Coast Survey at the time of publication of this chart, but if there were still only 508 20 years later after an expansion of the Survey, the total number of pre-1900 charts must have been quite low, making such charts quite rare now.
