About this Item
A numbered series of 10 pen and ink cartoon style sketches featuring a young boy in an oversized hat named Orlando, and his attempts to force his very stubborn horse January to swim. Each drawing numbered and with an amusing caption written in spoof Biblical prose, for example: "January evadeth Orlando and rolleth on the Sands. Orlando profiteth by the occasion". These sketches were published in their entirety in the Harper's Monthly of September 1881; unfortunately no artist was credited and we have been unable to locate any other examples. Drawn on heavy artist's stock, the drawings approximately 3 x 2 1/2" as indicated by a pencil line indicating to the printer where to crop for publication. The sheet size is 5 1/2 x 6". Past damp is visible on the first and last frame but does not detract much from the delightful illustrations. Seller Inventory # 22170
