About this Item
(12.5x19.5cm + 12.5x3cm) Original 'Rough' for the front panel and spine of the jacket on the UK first of a Jamaican novel featuring a slave heroine. Gouache on card, depicting the protagonist being sold at a slave market, laid down on thick black paper, closely resembling but not quite identical to the final design as published by Ernest Benn. The image comes from a substantial collection of Sax's jacket designs. De Lisser was British born to Afro-Jewish parents but was educated and worked as a journalist in Jamaica where his first novel, Jane, was the earliest west-Indian novel to have a black central character.
