About this Item
"Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated." Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the solitary Santiago and his struggle to boat his marlin. Arguably Hemingway's most popular novel, and his last sustained work of fiction in his lifetime. On the bestseller list for half a year, the book not only silenced critics who had lambasted his work, but earned its author the 1953 Pulitzer Price and the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899?1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. His economical and understated style?which he termed the iceberg theory?had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and public image brought him admiration from later generations. The novel was made into a 1958 American adventure drama film directed by John Sturges and starring Spencer Tracy. The screenplay was written by Peter Viertel. Dimitri Tiomkin won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on the film. The film was also nominated for Best Color Cinematography (Howe) and Best Actor (Tracy). At least two more film versions have been made. Commercial success offered Scribner the luxury to try innovative methods to sell additional copies of this title. This copy, (at 1st glance the same size and DJ as a 1st edition) was marked and promoted as from the "College Edition." Under 0.5% of the copies for sell are described as College Editions. Hardcover has powder blue cardboard covers with blue cloth spine, gold designs stamped into covers and lettering on spine, in an As New Dust Jacket. Rear cover is stamped College Edition, front cover has a marlin and faux Hemmingway signature. Jacket is aqua blue with blue ink. Front shows a scene with Santiago and the Marlin battling on the open sea. Unclipped jacket shows no price, mentions both the '54 Nobel & '53 Pulitzer prizes, mentions "Special Student Edition" & "College Department", while promoting other titles from Scribner for sale. Front facing end page has gift inscription that adds no value. Dust Jacket is in excellent shape, almost as new, except for sunburnt spine. Copyright 1952. Printed in U.S.A. Print line: A-6.61[H].
