About this Item
This monograph, based on a lecture provided to the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1962, follows the 100 year history of the famed British Legation in Peking, from its conversion from a Duke's royal palace into the British diplomatic corps' headquarters, in 1861, until its demolition to make way for the rebuilding of the heart of the city, in the middle of the 20th century. While the British lost a physical position in the city center the size and prominence of which could not really be justified for any foreign mission, the Chinese finally managed to dislodge a painful symbol of humiliation and defeat at the hands of 'foreign barbarians' that characterized the dying days of Imperial China. In the process the foundation of an improved relationship between the UK and the PRC was laid. 30 pp. (60-87 + 2 plates), 2 b&w photos, 1 map. (Offprint from JHKBRAS Vol. 3, 1963) Size: 21 x 14 cm.
