While most of his works were shorter pieces, one of his most substantial works was Observations up the United Provinces of the Netherlands . In this work, Temple describes the rise and progress of the Netherlands, government, culture and customs, religious preferences, trade, and commerce, as well as a commentary on their ultimate destruction in 1672 to war with France. This book also includes a second edition of William Temple s Memoirs of What Past in Christendom an account of the Franco-Dutch War and the third Anglo-Dutch War. Interestingly, this work was finished with the help of Jonathan Swift, Temple s secretary at the time.
