The books take place on plantations in the American South, starting before the start of the Civil War. Elsie is an eight-year-old girl who has been living with her paternal grandfather. Elsie's mother died soon after giving birth to her, and her father has been traveling in Europe. She is good friends with Rose Allison, with whom she studies the Bible. Martha Finley was a 19th century American author of children's stories. Her characters were good children rewarded for their high moral character. She wrote Elsie Dinsmore in 1867. Elsie was a virtuous Christian girl who resisted small temptations. Finley wrote 27 books about Elsie taking her through her adult life and ending with her as a grandmother.
