About this Item
246 leaves. Contemporary vellum, title in manuscript to spine. Marked and discoloured. Without rear blank fly-leaf, scattered spotting. With a cancelled German library stamp to title. Inked inscription to recto of front blank fly-leaf: 'To Mr. Seligman from Joseph Wolff'. The second impression of a translation of the New Testament into vocalised Hebrew by English cleric and religious writer Thomas Fry (1775-1860) with the assistance of notable divines including Congregational minister William Bengo' Collyer (1782-1854), first published in 1813 under the direction of the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews. Joseph Wolff (1795-1861), missionary and traveller. Born into a Franconian Jewish family, the son of a rabbi, by 1812 Wolff had nevertheless become disenchanted with Judaism. Following extensive travels on the continent, he arrived in London. Influenced by a visit to the Anglican mission to the Jews in Bethnal Green, London, he declared himself a member of the Church of England. He was then sent by the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews to Cambridge, to prepare himself for missionary work. The remainder of his life was dedicated to undertaking missionary expeditions as an agent of the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews, travelling extensively in the Middle East and central Asia.
