This 5.375 x 7.75 inch, 142 page hardcover book with dust wrapper is the stated first edition of this title with the copyright page showing a 1950 copyright and the statement ?First Edition.? This book is in near fine condition with just a touch of corner-wear showing to the blue-grey covers over black back-strip, with the silver lettering on the spine ?As New.? The interior text block shows a gift inscription on the front endpaper dated 1951. The text pages show no further markings or signs of damage. The dust jacket does show wear . . . with chipping and tears at the edges and with several missing half-inch chips at nearly every fold . . . but the jacket is complete and still firmly in one piece . . . with the $2.50 price showing on the inside flap. Fred Hoyle was an English scientist who was given wide acclaim in the post-World War Two years with his theories and insights into the nature of the cosmos and his abilities to knit together the expanding knowledge-base that was reshaping the possibility of understanding about our own planet and what lay beyond.
