About this Item
No date, no publishers' details, circa 1974, landscape 4to, pp[x], 80, black and white illustrations, some on separately-printed grey paper, grey pictorial wrappers, stapled. Possibly a self-published project by the enigmatic, controversial painter, who built a library about 25,000 scarce and unusual books on magic, witchcraft, alchemy and various deviant practises, which was housed in his historic studio residence on the Barbican at Plymouth. Always regarded as an eccentric, and renowned for attracting young women and old men, on the death of his close friend and model, the local tramp 'Diogenes', he embalmed the body and refused to give it up to the police, who failed to find it after conducting a search of the premises. Lenkiewicz's artistic talent has never been doubted, but only since his death has the value of his work increased (quite dramatically), and he is now a somewhat more respectable figure. Project 2: Death and the Maiden, was exhibited in Plymouth between 25th July and 20th November 1974, and in Coventry for ten days from 25th November. Presumably this book is contemporary with the exhibition; Plymouth City Library has the only two copies located on OCLC Worldcat, and their date attribution of 1975 applies to the date of donation only.
