Second edition. 8vo., frontis. + xii + 304 pp. Bound in recent half red morocco over red cloth; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting black morocco title label, gilt. Occasional foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated with one lithograph plate and numerous drawings in text, including title page vignette. First edition published 1885. Henry Faulds (1843-1930) was a Scottish GP who attended the University of Glasgow. He sailed to Japan in late 1873 as a medical missionary on behalf of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland and worked as a surgeon at the Tsukiji Hospital. He compiled this lively account of Japanese life, customs and natural history, based on his residence and travels there. While in Japan, he developed the idea of fingerprinting, after noticing the impressions left by potters on the rims of their vessels. On his return to Britain in 1885, he tried to interest Scotland Yard in the possibilities of using this technique as a means of criminal identification but to no avail. It was not officially adopted until 1902 and others were credited with its development. An informative and entertaining account of life in Japan at a period when it was in the early stages of its remarkable economic development. It has been reprinted twice in recent years.
