About this Item
Contemporary full calf, rubbed and mottled but intact. Gilt decoration on spine with leather label (tiny loss). Page edges speckled. Unrestored. Bookplate of Thomas Carnegy Esquire of Craigo (d. 1793) on front pastedown. Subsequently owned by William Wodehouse (The Hon.) and Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe (artist and antiquary); both names appear in flowing script. This copy includes a handwritten letter, dated 1917, from Charles Hagberg Wright, Librarian at the London Library, valuing the book at £2-£3! The preceding first edition was privately printed in 1768 in an edition of only 50 copies on the author's own Strawberry Hill Press. An interesting copy of this early edition.
