An illustrated record of the Meiji Emperor`s imperial tour of the ancient Chuo highway in 1880-81. Includes numerous black and white illustrations by Matsumoto Fuuko (1840-1923), a reknowned painter of the Nihon-ga (Japanese-style painting) school. The woodblocks used for printing were owned by the Ministry of the Imperial Household. Original bindings. Slight damage to the cover title plate of v.2. Ex-ownership stamps and minor soiling to covers. Occasional minor wormholing. In extremely nice condition. Text in Japanese. Seller Inventory # 341
