About this Item
Published by David Bogue in 1855. Illustrated with etchings on steel by Birket Foster. Size:11 x 7 1/2 inches. Hardcover. Tan coloured cloth covers blind stamped and decorated with gilt on the front and spine. Beveled edges, gilt end blocks. Thick cream pages printed on one side only with tissue guards covering each page. The poems are written in red lettering, the 30 illustrations are in black. The poems in this volume debate two opposing ideas. Using the contrasting settings of day and night L'Allegro describes a joyful, pastoral world whilst Il Penseroso sets a darker, melancholy mood. Condition: Very Good. The cover is worn at the corners and tip and base of the spine, but remains clean and fresh. the binding is secure though cracked at the junction between title page and endpaper. The first endpaper is stained perhaps by water. There are historic repairs to the spine at both the front and back hinges. This using cloth tape. The rear endpaper sits a little proud at the endblock. There is some light foxing on the first few pages of the book but the pages are otherwise, but for occasional marks, very clean and fresh. The tissue guards are not creased. The last endpaper is a little creased. Seller Inventory # 001109
