". the story of Tom and Maggie Tulliver, a pair of siblings who grow up together on a river in early nineteenth century England. While Tom's reserved nature and Maggie's idealism produce differences that strain their love in times of hardship, the two ultimately reconcile when confronted with certain death. A powerful work on individual tenacity in the face of oppressive circumstance, The Mill on the Floss remains one of Eliot's most powerful works on unconditional solidarity and love." -- from amazon dot com description. "George Eliot is the pen name that Mary Ann (later Marian) Evans adopted in 1857, at the age of thirty-eight, for her first works of fiction: three short stories that first appeared in Blackwood's Magazine. By that time she had already published her translation of a German Life of Jesus, she had been an assistant editor of The Westminster Review, and had been living since 1854 with the writer George Henry Lewes. Though marriage was impossible because he could not obtain a divorce, their union lasted until Lewe's death in 1878. The Mill on the Floss was popular from the start, and in little more than a month it went into a third printing. The vigorous and romantic illustrations that embellish this edition of The Mill on the Floss are oil paintings by the Ohio artist Wray Manning. The text and illustrations of this edition are printed on a paper of superb printing quality, chosen for its resistance to deterioration. The top-grain leather has been fitted over heavy boards and then stamped in leaf with a motif created exclusively for this volume. As with the others in this collection of The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written, the edges are protected frm fraying, moisture, and soiling by a coating of gilding leaf. Every step has been taken to assure the possessor of this book continued pleasure and permanent value." -- excerpt from The Publisher's Preface. Seller Inventory # 006658
