Ion Llewellyn Idriess OBE (1889 - 1979) was a prolific and influential Australian author. He wrote more than 50 books over 43 years. In this book, Idriess details how he and his Aboriginal prospecting friends, the Bairds, worked their way through far north-east Queensland between Cairns and Cooktown. [From Preface] The publishers have asked me to write an account of the more adventurous part of my life. Men of the Jungle is a first instalment. At the time, the experiences here told did not appear to me very adventurous - nor do they now. But city folk, I find, look at these events differently to those familiar with the vicissitudes of a wanderer's life. It is for my readers to judge. If they show - by the only test publishers accept - that they like this book, another will follow, giving the story of my wanderings in other fields with other mates. How Norman and Charlie will smile when they read these chapters! They are still in their beloved home district, the Bloomfield. But the last I heard of Assan, venturesome son of a Malay pirate, was that he had sailed away in his tiny cutter on vengeance bent, seeking a certain Filipino, last heard of in the Aru Islands, off the coast of Dutch New Guinea. Old Antonio and Philip Johnson, swarthy sea-rovers, have sailed on their last voyage, followed to the Shadow Land by kindly George Stewart, the old hatter of Mount Molloy. Old Tommy the Chinaman has gone there too. The Pierce brothers are still at the Landing, and Frank Crowley, I believe, is still at Mount Molloy. Some of the Olufson family are at the old home on the Upper River, but I last saw the father and mother in Cairns. Nearly all the others mentioned are "going strong," although there has been a scatter amongst the coloured folk at the settlement. . Seller Inventory # 20240731031
