4 preliminary pages, 190 pages, good condition in 19th century calf, edges and corners of boards rubbed, spine faded and rubbed, leather title label (chipped), marbled paper end-papers, preliminary and concluding blank pages spotted, occasional marks and spotting of the text pages but generally in good, clean condition. Presentation inscription on blank preliminary page ("To/Hilton Lambard Esqre./as a small token of the esteem/and gratitude of his friend/J Bowdler"), also later ownership inscription (1931) of H Maynard Smith. From the library of Maynard Smith and Outram Smith with circular ink stamp on the front free end-paper and ink reference number on spine. Loosely enclosed is the 1939 Christmas and New Year card from the Secretary of the Philanthropic Society, Robert Nesbitt (single folded sheet of hand-made paper printed on 3 pages, fine).
