About this Item

William Roberts (1767-1849), an English barrister and editor, published his four-volume biography of Hannah More (1745-1833) in 1834, shortly after MoreÕs death. More was a poet, playwright, and prominent member of the Bluestockings. Her anti-slavery position, as well as her views on morality and religion, often made their way into her poetry and prose. RobertsÕ biography was the first on More and includes many of her personal letters in full. Four volumes, twelvemo. [3], pp. vi, 407, [3 blank] pp.; [4 blank], pp. 4, 483, [3]; [3], pp. 4, 478, [2 blank] pp.; [2], pp. 4, 456. Etched portrait frontispiece in first volume. Contemporary green polished calf. Geometric and floral designs stamped in very bright gilt and in blind on covers. Maroon smooth calf labels on spine, lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Some scuffs on covers, some rubbing on corners and edges. Some foxing on endpapers, as usual. Very clean pages throughout. Small stain on page 3 of second volume, does not affect text. Repaired tear in label on spine of second volume. Inscription, dated 1835, on front free endpaper of first volume. Very good, bright, and sound volumes. Third edition revised by Roberts and including a new preface in response to critics. Seller Inventory # 16651
