About this Item
Large, mostly uncolored (there are small areas of color on the left side view) print on linen, backed with stiffer modern linen. Very good condition, with black stain at bottom edge and rust marks from earlier likely framing. There are some small holes in the early linen at the edges where staples or nails penetrated. The stain at the bottom edge largely obscures the imprint, but the attribution to the Band of Hope Union, a British temprance organization founded in 1847 and still active today, can be inferred from the characters visible. The print is divided into two views. On the left is the image titled Mash Tun, showing a worker overlooking a huge vat stirring a mash mixture. This type of mixture would be used both in the brewing of beer and distilling of malt whiskey. The view on the right is titled Fermenting Vessels and shows a brewer/distiller smiling happily while looking up at large vats of mash, consisting of malt and water. A large, very unusual piece demonstrating elements of the brewing or distilling processes in mid-19th century England. Seller Inventory # p00050
