About this Item
10 vols. in various formats, all orig. gray cardboard wrappers rubber-stamped by the artist, staple-bound & housed in the orig. cardboard portfolio. Hilden, Germany: Self-published, 1972-73. Scarce second portfolio complete with its 10 distinct photobooks and the artist s handmade cardboard folder self-published by Feldmann (1941-2023) from his home in Hilden. Our portfolio contains 10 of his early photographic artist s books all made in editions of 80, according to Kühnast s catalogue raisonné of seemingly arbitrary series depicting trees covered in snow, ambulances, city streets, a volcano, household tools, etc. The books in the present portfolio are listed below, in the order established by Kühnast and titles that we have supplied: 1. 9 Bilder [City Streets]. 9 b&w illus. [12] pp. Hilden: 1972. KB 14 (incorrectly dated "1971" by Kühnast). 2. 11 Bilder [Maid Making a Bed]. 11 b&w illus. [12] pp. Hilden: 1972. KB 16. 3. 1 Bild [Oasis]. 1 double-page b&w illus. [4] pp. Hilden: 1972. KB 19. 4. 5 Bilder [Snowy Trees]. 1 double-page & 4 full-page b&w illus. [8] pp. Hilden: 1972. KB 20. 5. 3 Bilder [Chairs]. 3 b&w illus. [4] pp. Hilden: 1972. KB 21. 6. 8 Bilder [Ambulances]. 8 b&w illus. [8] pp. Hilden: 1972. KB 23. 7. 11 Bilder [Seascapes]. 11 b&w illus. [12] pp. Hilden: 1972-73. KB 24. 8. 7 Bilder [Tools]. 7 b&w illus. [8] pp. Hilden: 1973. KB 25. 9. 1 Bild [Volcano]. 1 double-page b&w illus. [4] pp. Hilden: 1973. KB 28. 10. 3 Bilder [Paintings]. 3 b&w illus. [4] pp. Hilden: 1973. KB 29. All 10 of the books are in fine condition, as is the artist s handmade stamped folder. ? "The small artist s books simply entitled either Bild (Picture) or Bilder (Pictures) that Hans Peter Feldmann made between 1968 and 1976 constitute one of the most important bodies of artist s bookworks in the twentieth century, along with those of Ruscha and Boltanski. In Feldmann s case, it is perhaps more difficult to explain why, but their utter simplicity and studied lack of artifice is a good place to begin. The books are invariably of modest size, most often with brown covers rather like school exercise books, in which varying numbers of found photographs of a particular subject category are reproduced cheaply." Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, Vol. II, p. 158. G. Kühnast, ed., Hans-Peter Feldmann: Bücher, Publikationen, Hefte, 1960er Jahre-2021 (2023).
