About this Item
A pleasant period photo of 'Main Street, West of Spring Street' in then Sing Sing, NY (later renamed Ossining) after a major blizzard that occurred March 12-14, 1888. A group of people in winter clothing and horse and sleigh stand before a huge amount of snow in the street, with someone planted head first in the snow mound! Within the shot, visible business signage of 'The Republican Printing Office', 'Vanderbilt Photographer', and 'Anker'. Later printed and affixed caption reads, "Looking east from Barlow & Co. Blizzard of March 12, 1888." In 1872 a fire had destroyed all the buildings on lower Main St. The Barlow family had operated a hardware and furniture business Barlow and Co. since 1844, rebuilt the area at 129-139 Main Street for commercial use naming it Barlow Block. Albumen photograph, 6 3/4 x 4 1/2" mounted on card 10 x 8", photo faded, slt. marked, mount dusty and marked with pin holes in corners, taped caption numered (10L) with text at lower right, pencil notes on verso.
