[LGBTQ] [Transgender] Marlowe, Kenneth. Mr. Madam: Confessions of a Male Madam. Los Angeles: Sherbourne Press, 1964. First edition. 246 pages. Yellow cloth binding with title, author, and publisher in black on spine. Original red and gold dustjacket with black outline of a naked man. Mr. Madam is the tell-all memoir of drag performer, sex worker, and LGBTQ icon Kate Marlowe prior to her transition from male to female in 1975. Marlowe was born in 1926 and began in entertainment as an exotic dancer at New Orlean's premier drag spot Club My-O-My. In the 1950s and 60s Marlowe expanded into a successful career as a hairdresser with renowned clients including burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. Marlowe worked as a sex worker throughout her life, including a stint as the "Male Madam" of an elite Hollywood brothel providing male escorts to high-class clientele. In her memoir, Marlowe tells outrageous stories of her early life, her most intimate sexual experiences, including a violent and traumatic sexual assault suffered at the hands of fellow soldiers after being drafted, and her search for love and acceptance. Despite the risque and taboo subject matter, the 1964 book became a bestseller and established Marlowe as a capable author. Marlowe transitioned from male to female 11 years after the publication of Mr. Madam and later married an inmate at San Quentin prison, Robert Barnes, making her the first transgender person to marry in a California prison. Mr. Madam was adapted in to a play in 2022 and premiered off-Broadway to critical acclaim with the title Make Me Gorgeous! in 2023. Light wear to dustjacket, faint pencil marks to front end pages. Overall very good condition. The bestselling memoir of mid-century LGBT icon Kate Marlowe prior to her transition. Seller Inventory # 20773
