Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine binding. First Edition. Quarto; in the publisher's green cloth, with titling in gilt; with portrait frontispiece protected with tissue guard, and the facsimile plate of the dedication written by Long on a plate used by the blind; [1], 2-707 pages, including the Index; with four plates, including the frontispiece, and with the large folding map of The Seat of War in Virginia, and seven facsimiles of General Lee's Field-Maps; with pale blue patterned paper endpapers; there is a very discreet repair to the front hinge.~~Nevins notes that Long was a former Confederate officer on Lee's staff, but is a bit dismissive, considering the account to be "uncritical and superficial". Eicher is more forgiving, noting that the Memoirs were penned "by the blinded staff officer Armistead Lindsay Long, painstakingly scratched onto a slate and buttressed with substantial official documents" [and] "captures a fair amount of minutiae relating to Lee's early life as well recollections of the war years."~~Overall a bright, attractive copy. One of the nicest we've had of this edition. (Nevins II, 73; Eicher 268). Near Fine binding. Seller Inventory # 298355
