1817. Presumed first French edition. 216pp. and 243pp. This is a scarce volume containing two accounts of the author's experiences in London at the start of the 19th century. The first part tells of 15 days in London near the end of 1815, and in the second part he writes of six months spent in the City in 1816. The text is in French, and the work provides a fascinating insight into London and the life of its inhabitants some 200 years ago, as seen through the eyes of a Frenchman. No author is stated but it is believed to be Auguster Jean-Baptiste Defauconpret (1767-1843), a French man of letters. Initially a lawyer, Defauconpret relocated to England where he wrote some now forgotten novels. However, he became well known for his translations into French of English-language novels, particularly those of Walter Scott and James Fenimore Cooper, although he modified the text of The Last of the Mohicans to be more favorable to the French. The book is bound in contemporary full leather boards but the spine is missing and the boards are loosely held in place by the cords. The boards have scuffing and some staining and a little damage and loss to the leather around the corner and the spine edges, but could probably be used by a professional bookbinder if the book was to be repaired. The contents are tight and the pages are clean although there is browning and foxing to some of the pages, mainly at the start and end of the book. There is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper and name and date written on the reverse of the front free endpaper. Seller Inventory # Net0783
