"My little Darling's Pictorial ABC" was published by McLaughlin Brothers in New York, circa 1889. It is a reprint of a book published in the late 1850s. (One can tell the decade of the original book from the styles of clothing worn by the children depicted in the pictures as well as the fact that various libraries, including the New York Public Library have so identified the date) The front cover and interior are printed with brightly colored chromolithograph pictures. On the cover it looks like two young children seem so excited with their ABC lessons that they are trying to climb into the giant book open in front of them; they have left their toys behind them on the floor. Inside, each page presents brightly colored chromolithographic pictures depicting objects for for each letter of the alphabet . The text is quite simple, in verse format (A stands for Apple, which you may see. B is for Ball, as round as can be. C begins Cat, and Carpet, and Cup. D is for Dash, who nicely sits up.) Each letter of the Alphabet is presented in upper case and lower case form. Some pictures have several objects related to a letter, others, such as X have only one. Letter C mentions a cup, but no cup appears, which might have sent little nursery scholar into piques of frustration - looking for the object that just is not there. For C there is a Cat, a Canary in a Cage, a Cockatoo, what looks to be a Carpet, a Cheese, some Cards on the floor. and the cat has pounced on a mouse. one might say the Cat had Caught a Critter. ///// The final interior page has pictures of a small boy, and a mother or maid holding up a baby. Beneath these is a rhyming presentation of the full Alphabet : A, B, C, and D, Pray playmates agree, E, F, and G, Well so it shall be, J, K. and L, In peace we shall dwell M, N, and O, to play let us go, P, Q, R, and S, Love may we possess W, X, and Y, Will ni quarrel or die, Z and &, Go to school at command. ///// The rear exterior presents a list of McLaughlin Brothers' series books ("NEW PICTURE BOOKS FOR LITTLE CHILDREN) : "Big Picture Series" - 31 Kinds - AUNT LOUISA ! IMPRINT : McLaughlin Brothers. PLACE : New York. DATE : No Date [ but 1889 . as per catalog records ]. EDITION : Reprint . STATUS : Scarce . OP. Illustrated Nursery ABC Book in paperback format; illustrated with chromolithographic pictures (brightly colored pictures); 16 unnumbered pages (pagination includes exterior); 6" x 9"; color-pictorial self wrapped, thin but stiff, buff card stock paper, sewn (The picture on the front printed in black, red, green yellow and brown). The spine is mended by a covering of cloth which has been stitched and likely glued. This is a very old mending effort, practically contemporary with the age of the book. The front cover is described above. The rear cover is printed in black on buff with the publisher's list. CONDITION . GOOD ----- THIS IS A PREVIOUSLY OWNED BOOK WHICH HAS SEEN CONSIDERABLE USE, AND WHICH EXHIBITS THE SIGNS OF THAT USE TO WIT: EXTERIOR : Splitting and tears to front cover at spine; spine mended with cloth (glued and stitched); small loss about edges; tears and nicks about edges; creasing and surface scuff (small patch of color loss on front ). BINDING : Fragile but intact. Mending was effected a long time ago. INTERIOR : Much thumbed . the edges have fore-edge tears throughout. there are small smudges and a few small "tea" stains. there are a few what seem to be brief pencil marks, but no writing or crayola marking.
