About this Item
Octavo. 422pp., (6) pp. publisher's catalog. Boldly signed and inscribed by the author Meredith Nicholson. 422 pages illustrated by James Montgomery Flagg. One of the most famous Hoosier authors, here is a long inscription to F. Rollen Kautz, Esq.: "Now that the jug has ceased to be - or at least should not be - the sight of this book caused me great pain and a burning thirst. Before writing it, I visited both Raleigh and Columbia and I violate no confidence in saying that I have no wish to return to either place." Nicholson had traveled to both Raleigh, N.C. and Columbia, S.C. to get the right flavor of his novel. The moonshiner (Bill Applegate) who resided in Kildare on the border of both North and South Carolina irritated temperance voices while each governor tried to follow the political winds. In the New York Times review of October 3, 1908, the reviewer said that Mr. Nicholas has written an amusing book. Most of the author's papers are at Yale or the Indiana Historical Society. Bound in green cloth, color pictorial pastedown, spine lettered and decorated in white and green, some rubbing to spine ends, spine lettering rubbed. A very good copy. Seller Inventory # 028618
