About this Item
Pale green cloth over boards with black titles and illustration. This book contains two novels in one by Otis Shackelford -- Lillian Simmons and Seeking the Best. I can find little information on Shackelford. He was a novelist/essayist who seems to have been a devotee of Booker T. Washington. His books are described as a cross between fiction and essay that promote the idea of what Professor Ibram X. Kendi calls "uplift suasion," the idea that African-Americans needed to pull themselves up through work and education -- an idea that did not work. These two novels support that notion. There are illustrations by African-American artist William Hamilton and a frontispiece of Shackelford before the beginning of Seeking the Best. This is the 7th edition of Lillian Simmons and the 10th of Seeking the Best, which indicates that the books were popular. This copy has some generally light edge, corner and surface wear with some light, white residue at the bottom of the front cover. The book is square and the binding has no tears or parting. However, the second novel, Seeking the Best, sits slightly forward, probably because of the printing and binding method. Overall, this is a very good copy of two little-known African-American works. ; B&W Illustrations; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 204, 192 pages. Seller Inventory # 16759
