Hardback small (18.6 x 12.7 cm), recased original green cloth cover retaining endpapers, gilt brief title on spine, very good condition, edges lightly speckled, title page base repaired, foxing & toning edges & endpapers. 256 pp. (Originally published 1876 by Cameron & Ferguson, Glasgow. Estimated date of this undated R. & T. Washbourne, London, reprint: about 1880 or 1910.) Biography of the Irish social campaigner and nationalist politician who founded the Irish National Land League. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), a Fenian organization in Ireland. He organised arms smuggling to Ireland, but was arrested and imprisoned by the English, but was released on a ticket-of-leave after serving seven years. He rejoined the IRB, where he held that the common people of Ireland could not improve their lot without ownership of their land. Bookseller Inventory # 12619
