Octavo. In three volumes, mixed set. Illustrated. Portrait frontispieces to each volume. Volume I, 398pp. 1812-1941-6th edition; Volume II, 462pp. 1942-1952-Twelfth Thousand; and Volume III, 552pp. 1852-1870-1st edition. Volume I has a special inserted image of the author John Forster. Forster met Dickens in 1836; he became and remained Dickens's staunch and loyal friend. Dickens appointed Forster co-executor of his will and bequeathed to him "to my dear and trusty friend" the MSS of works in Dickens's possession at the time of his death. He became Dickens's adviser and counsellor in literary matters. A very handsome set bound by Mansell in full tree calf, boards framed in a decorative gilt, red and green contrasting morocco spine labels gilt, all other compartments fully gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. joints had been re-enforced., some spots of rubbing to spines.
