First complete Bensley illustrated edition, large paper copy, 2 volumes, 8vo (9 1/2" x 6"), pp.(i-ii)title, i-xxxix, (xl-xliv) advertisement, 1-274; (i-ii), 1-319,(320)blank; with extra engraved title dated 1797 for each volume & 21 engraved portrait plates inserted, wood engraved head & tailpieces by Bewick. Full contemporary red straight grain morocco, gilt key & foliation roll-tooled borders on all sides - gilt paneled backs with star center ornaments, 5 raised bands, black leather gilt titled lettering pieces, gilt key roll-tooled turn ins, gilt filleted squares, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. According to "The Advertisement", (dated 1799), the first Bensley edition was 1794 (without plates). The editions of 1796 & 1797 included 16 portraits & the 1799 edition included 21 portraits with plans to add more in the future.
