About this Item
Early reprint, the same year as the first printing. Clipping on front pastedown, ownership signature of Maude Kirby-Smith of Sewanee dated in 1918. Moderate edgewear about very good. Although not marked as such, this copy is from the library of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Peter Taylor and his wife, the National Book Award-nominated poet Eleanor Ross Taylor. The ownership signature is that of the daughter-in-law of the famed Confederate Civil War General Edmund Kirby-Smith, who lived in Sewanee after the war (and where he raised five sons and six daughters). Alan Seeger's poems were published posthumously after his death fighting with the French Foreign Legion. The book was not a critical success, but his Harvard classmate T.S. Eliot said of him and his work in his review of the book in *The Egoist*: "It is high-flown, heavily decorated and solemn, but its solemnity is thorough going, not a mere literary formality. Alan Seeger, as one who knew him can attest, lived his whole life on this plane, with impeccable poetic dignity; everything about him was in keeping.". Seller Inventory # 366405
