About this Item
9" x 11 1/2", royal blue cloth with debossed gilt titling to front board and spine, in illustrated dust jacket with paste-on plate (7 1/2" x 6") of the clipper 'Blue Jacket' on front panel. Limited Edition signed by artist in middle of FFEP. Includes ORIGINAL PLATES (6) laid in [see below]. A catalogue raisonne of the artwork of Leslie Wilcox with 267 catalogued works, 72 plates on 36 coated pages and two tipped-in color plates of the clipper ships 'Blue Jacket' [same as dj plate] and 'Queen of the Seas'. This copy formerly the property of the Naval Club (aka RNVR Club) but not marked as so; includes a catalogued negative from the US Naval Academy of a 1967 Wilcox work ('North Atlantic Convoy, World War II'), and six 8" x 6" glossy b&w photos of Wilcox paintings with stamp of The Parker Gallery, London W1, on verso with penciled notations on each work, with 'Sold' notation, in different hand, on 5; one photo has paste-on typewritten notation by conservator of the Naval Club denoting that the painting has been donated to them by Wilcox (frame donated by the Parker Gallery) and that the Club's yacht 'Volunteer' is painted in the foreground by Wilcox (featuring HMS Warspite and Royal Yacht 'Britannia'); this donation and a description of the painting is actually noted in the book's introduction [p. 13]. These photos are crystal-clear images of the paintings Wilcox sold through the Parker Gallery (his primary dealer), three of which are definitely the originals used for this book ["Earl of Balcarres", cat. #112; "The Opium Clipper 'Falcon'" #151; "The Clipper 'Red Jacket'" #184]; two others, "US Clippper 'Swordfish'" and "'Thermompylae' beating 'Cutty Sark'" did not make 'the cut', so to speak, and are not included in the book, nor is The Naval Club painting. Condition: the book is a solid Very Good with a near perfect interior (no writing or other marks), some bumping and rubbing to edges and spine ends, and a few spots on upper left corner of front board which are lighter in color than the royal blue cloth; otherwise excellent. Dust jacket is about Very Good with a few small closed tears at edges, a few small chips at the spine ends, age-toning to spine, and a narrow 2-inch long stain on the back panel; otherwise good. See the enlarged photo. Seller Inventory # 00243v
