Fifty years ago, Leeds Other Paper was born, an alternative local newspaper pieced together by people living and working around Leeds. Offering an alternative insight into the less told stories of the city, the paper gave a voice to many locals who felt ignored, patronised and, often demonised by the larger media outlets. Run by a co-operative, the paper lasted from 1974-1994. Covering workers rights and struggles, community campaigns, strikes, housing disputes and culture, the paper also carried free listings publicising claimants unions, alternative bookshops, event guides, reviews and more. In this copy published May 15th 1976, we find headline coverage of a successful May Day street party in Woodhouse, spoilt by police intervention. Alongside is a whole host of articles, from inquiries and information on personal protection at a Bradford chemical works and within the plastics industry, a feature titled Fighting Fascism Today , coverage of lesbian theatre groups at the National Women s Liberation Conference, and advice on getting a rent rebate. When Leeds Other Paper first appeared in print, the country was undergoing a cost-of-living crisis, at the tail-end of a Tory government…In a dispute between trade unionists and the powers-that-be, Yorkshire s newest alternative paper had no doubt whose side it was on, as made clear by its debut frontpage headline: Don t let the bastards carve us up hit the bosses where it hurts (in their pockets) (Mag North, 2024). A fine and insightful example of a radical, Northern countercultural newspaper, it is undoubtedly an important reflection into the world we continue to live in today. Leeds: Leeds Other Paper, 1976.
