First published in 1848, this later edition "embodies the results of 1200 recorded cases, and of nearly 400 postmortem examinations, collected from between 30,000 and 40,000 children who, during the past twenty-six years, have come under my care, either in public or private practice." - Preface to the Fifth Edition.Charles West (1816-1898), London-born physician and founder of the Hospital for Sick Children (1852) at Great Ormond Street in that city. His medical training on the continent, where medical treatment for children was more advanced than in England, led him to found a hospital where sick children could receive dedicated inpatient care. West was a friend of Charles Dickens, and Dickens spoke at the first annual dinner of the institution, and issued appeals and performed readings to raise funds for the hospital.
