His medical training on the continent, where medical treatment for children was more advanced than in England, led him to found a hospital where sick children could receive dedicated inpatient care. West was a friend of Charles Dickens, and Dickens spoke at the first annual dinner of the institution, and issued appeals and performed readings to raise funds for the hospital.
