1843. Third edition. 191pp. plus a 32 page publisher's catalogue dated November 1842. The "Lays of Ancient Rome" is a collection of narrative poems, or lays, by Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859). The four poems recount heroic episodes from early Roman history with strong dramatic and tragic themes, giving the collection its name. After a lengthy preface, contents are: Horatius; The Battle of the Lake Regillus; Virginia; The Prophecy of Capys. This edition does not contain two poems inspired by recent history - Ivry and The Armada - that appear in other editions. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind-stamped design in the centre of both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling together with some damp or water staining on the boards. The cloth in the middle of the front board is creased and wrinkled, probably from water damage, and there is slight lifting to the cloth on the rear board. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and foxing to the first dozen or so pages, including the title-page. There is a brief inscription on the top edge of the title-page.
