276 pages. Original brick-colored blind-stamped cloth binding, gilt lettering on the spine. Published by the trustees of the estate of Lindley Murray, author and grammarian, who in his will bequeathed certain funds for benevolent purposes, the trustees deeming this collection "acceptable reading to our Colored Americans." The contributions include biographies of Phillis Wheatley, Sojourner Truth, Benjamin Banneker, George Hardy, Solomon Bayley, and such non-fiction such as "The Flight of a Slave," "The Blind Slave in the Mines," "Emancipation in New York" and "The Freedmen of American." Good condition, with chipping to head and heel of spine, rubbing to the corners, front free end paper missing, and two small early newspaper clippings on unrelated topics affixed inside the boards and another at bottom of copyright page.
